ABOUT THE MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF VOLOS

The museum of the city of Volos is the first and unique modern city museum in Greece until today (2015).
It is located in the area of Palaia - 15 Feron street - and it is housed in Papandos’ tobacco storehouse of the 1920’s.
In museum’s backyard, a part of the eastern side of the Castle of Volos enclosure is preserved.

On the ground floor, spaces for temporary exhibitions, hosting conferences, seminars, and corporate presentations are configured.  Additionally, a museum shop and a reading lounge are formed.

In the room of temporary exhibitions parts of water mains which dated to the Middle Byzantine period (6th-7th AD) are displayed.

The museum was founded in December 2014 when opened its doors to the public with the exhibition "Volos - Nea Ionia: so far, so close”.

It is organized in two levels. In the hallway of each floor an indicative timeline shows the city’s historical evolution from the time of the occupation of the castle of Palia by the Ottomans in 1423 to the museum’s opening in 2014.

The exhibition is grouped in nine sections.

The first section concerns the Urban Αrea” which the Greek refugees from the Asia Minor saw when they arrived in the city of Volos in 1922 and the foundations they created in the new homeland.

Next section is dedicated to “Labour” as it presents the continuous human effort for survival and creation through the collective contribution of locals and refugees to the economic development of  Volos and Nea Ionia.

The section of “Habitation” presents the spaces that housed the private life of city’s residents and the life in different neighborhoods.

Moreover, “Clothing” is used as a key for the interpretation of the social economic and professional differentiation of the people of the city.

In the area where the old school desks are displayed, in the section of “People”, the life stories of the residents of Volos and New Ionia become   the focal point of the exhibition.

In order to understand the city life and the different ways people spent their free time, the section concerning “Leisure time” presents residents’ engagement in recreational activities.

Football” which  is the favorite sport of younger and elder, reflects the differences between “locals” and  “refugees” through the traditional rivalry of  Volos’ two major football clubs, Niki and Olympiakos.

During the “Periods of crisis”, the German-Italian occupation (1941-1944), the years of earthquakes and floods (1955-1957), and later the time of industrialization in the mid-1980s, the common fate of  the people of Volos mitigated the discrimination between refugees and locals.

Last section is referring to the “Reuse” of the city’s old buildings and their transformation into monuments of modern cultural heritage.

In the end of the exhibition, in the area of self-reflection, educational activities for students of primary & secondary schools are held.
